As January is only around the corner, the Newcastle transfer news is coming in thick and fast. The Magpies need to strengthen better than most of their competitors in this mid-season window due to their injury crisis. Although Eddie Howe has done a good job at keeping the momentum going at St James Park, he is the first to admit he could do with some recruitments in the January window.

With that being said, one of the main names being linked with a move to the North of England is Bundesliga sensation Serhou Guirassy. The Stuttgart and Guinea forward has netted 16 goals already this season and is the only striker who can keep up with Harry Kane's exploits in the German top flight.

Part of the territory of targeting one of Europe's most in-form players comes rivalry. Particularly in Germany, Guirassy has made a name for himself so it's no surprise that Newcastle aren't the only team who want to make a signing.

According to a report from German outlet Bild, Dortmund have joined Newcastle in the race to sign the 27-year-old striker, who seems to be at the peak of his powers at the moment. That said, it will be an interesting battle between the two sides who have played each other twice in the Champions League this season.

Admittedly, this race could be decided tonight, depending on which teams in the Group of Death make it through to the Champions League knockout stages. Both teams need a win to progress, but Newcastle know they will be relying on Dortmund to beat PSG.

Having already secured their place in the knockout stage of the competition, Dortmund may have the advantage with signing Guirassy. However, should Newcastle join them, the race could get interesting.
