As we are in the final two weeks of the January transfer window, there will be plenty of Newcastle transfer news but as far as fans are concerned, it would be better to see more action. We need to sign players, there are no two ways about it given the injury crisis at St James Park, which is only made worse by the Joelinton injury setback.

With Joelinton out injured for the rest of the season, Eddie Howe has no choice but to sign a new midfielder, which is where Joelinton is mostly used this season. As much as Kalvin Phillips is the dream signing, talks seem to have stalled in recent days so it's good to see progression is made with his alternative.

According to a report by Sport Witness (quoting PL Brasil), Newcastle could be making moves to sign Ederson of Atalanta. The Brazilian midfielder is said to be keen on the move and the Magpies have sent out scouts to watch him in action, where they have been impressed with what they've seen.

The only setback, though, could be his valuation. Within the report, it is stated that Atalanta have upped their valuation, meaning they will only enter negotiations if Newcastle are prepared to cough up at least £51m. It's a steep price to pay but as far as Newcastle are concerned, they would be getting a 24-year-old versatile midfielder, who could be the driving force in the centre of the park, which they lack without Joelinton.

When compared to Kalvin Phillips, the price is obviously a lot higher but Newcastle would be signing Ederson permanently, not just on loan. With the higher-ups at St James Park due to meet this week, their decision may be made then.
