Since joining the Magpies club in January 2023, Anthony Gordon's reputation has seen a gradual increase in European football. In fact, only in two campaigns with Newcastle United has the star winger risen to significant prominence, making a name of his own in the list of distinguished wingers. Gordon's Newcastle numbers have been great; managing 25 goal contributions in 68 appearances, the winger has become one of the important names at the club.

In particular, Anthony Gordon's 2023/24 campaign was the winger's breakout one, contributing 23 goals to the team's tally. The Englishman was crucial in an overall disappointing campaign for Newcastle. Credit to his heroics for the Magpies club, the 23-year-old had deservedly won a place in England's squad list for the Euros 2024.

However, what happened was nothing less than sheer disappointment for Gordon, and recently, he spoke to ITV about the same. Even though England made it to the Finals, Gordon only managed to get 5 minutes of play in the entire campaign. In fact, it looked much clear that Southgate's unit lacked flair in their forward play, but despite that, Gordon wasn't given a chance to showcase his talent.

Expressing utmost disappointment, the star winger has finally opened up on how he had imagined it to be vs. how it turned out. Gordon said,

"“I felt like I was ready to go and impress people and help the country win the trophy. So from what I envisioned to what it was, it was disappointing.”"

Further, Gordon mentioned that while he was even willing to contribute, coming in as a super sub, it just didn't happen. Speaking about his willingness to contribute, the Newcastle star said,

"“Like I said, I believed in myself, so even from the bench, I was thinking if he brings me on, I’m going to be ready. But it didn’t happen.""

Overall, it was a disappointing campaign for Gordon, who, coming on the back of a significant season with the Magpies, could have contributed to England's success. However, the Euros being over long ago, the winger cannot do much about it and would hope to replicate his previous heroics for Newcastle this season.
