Newcastle's summer transfer window was a complete disaster. With the club losing out on key reinforcements, including Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi and Nottingham's prospective wing forward, Anthony Elanga, the Magpies club had few positives from the transfer event. However, going much silent in the transfer window for the consecutive 2nd time, things are expected to change in Newcastle's January window.

Newcastle might reignite interest in the 21-year-old keeper in the January transfer window

As is being reported, sporting director Pau Mitchell would have considerable funds to hunt for prospect signings in the winter, giving indications of a big January window. Although, as per the current scenario, the club has a number of requirements to spend money on, significant chances are that they might be ready to invest in a backup goalkeeper to Nick Pope.

Although the club already has signed John Ruddy and Odysseus Vlachodimos, which makes it difficult to think of a new one, the two haven't been proven efficient enough to give a challenge to Nick Pope. Considering that the Englishman has turned 32, one of Eddie Howe's main concerns was to land a prospective goalkeeper; however, it seems their issue remains still unresolved.

Analyzing this scenario, chances could arise that the club makes a U-turn, reigniting their transfer interest in Burnley's James Trafford. Not to forget, the 21-year-old had been on the club's targets till the deadline day; however, the talks ultimately halted, keeping him at Burnley. Considering the status of Ruddy and Vlachidomos at the club, Howe's desire might fuel up to bring in Trafford in the next window.

Via Athletic, Chris Waugh had his say on Newcastle's situation about James Trafford,

"“Howe wanted a higher-caliber backup goalkeeper, and he still does, so it would not be a surprise if Newcastle returned for Trafford or made a move for another shot-stopper in January.”"

Considering that the former Manchester City prodigy might arrive at a reasonable price of £19 million, the Burnley number 1, definitely stands a brilliant chance of arriving at the Magpies club next year. While it remains to be seen whether the club pursues James Trafford in the future or not, Howe's demand for a better backup stopper would certainly influence a goalkeeper signing.
