Newcastle United have been trying to complete the signing of Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi in this transfer window. Their need for a new central defenders stems from the fact that the Magpies conceded twice the number of goals last season as compared to the season before, when they successfully qualified for the UEFA Champions League ahead of the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea. But there defence was inconsistent last season, which hampered Newcastle's ambitions of playing European football in back to back seasons.

Now, today is the final day of the summer transfer window and still there has been no agreement between Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, which means that Guehi is highly likely to stay at Palace this season. Moreover, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has also officially confirmed that the England international is staying at the Selhurst Park. Ahead of their match against Chelsea, Oliver Glasner spoke about Marc Guehi, saying,

"Yes I can confirm. But I was never in doubt. Congratulations to our owners because they didn’t give in. Thank you to Marc, he was always open with me. All the rumours didn’t influence his performances.

He always told me that he’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and that is always for me the most important thing."

After several weeks of submitting new bids, with the latest bid of around £65 million, Newcastle United are going empty handed in their pursuit of signing Guehi. On top of that, the Magpies haven't made any huge signing in this transfer window, and Eddie Howe's side are almost unchanged except the signing of Lloyd Kelly and Vlachodimos alongside the comeback of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali. Only a few hours are remaining in the transfer window, thus, it remains to be seen if the club make some additions to their squad for this season.
