It appeared that Newcastle United were in for a difficult campaign after selling many of their top players, including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes. Eddie Howe also departed, but Matthias Jaissle has done a solid job so far.

Newcastle were unbeaten in all competitions after their first five games, which included a draw with Liverpool and a win over Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Magpies were brought down to earth on Monday night as they lost heavily to Leeds United.

Hull City have had a remarkable start to the season, considering everyone was tipping them for relegation. The Tigers beat Manchester United on the opening day, drew with Chelsea and are currently fourth in the Premier League and eight places above the Magpies.

  • September 21, 2013: Newcastle 2-3 Hull - Loïc Rémy X2.

These are the last five competitive games between the two sides. Newcastle have played Hull twice in friendlies since their EFL Cup match in 2016. Those friendly games resulted in a 2-0 win for Newcastle in 2024 and a 2-2 draw in 2018.

One of the goalscorers in those friendlies was Joselu. He became a legend at Real Madrid for his appearances off the bench while on loan at the club in the 2023/24 campaign. Few would have predicted that would happen when he was at St. James' Park.

Notably, the goalscorer against Hull the last time the two teams met in a competitive game was Diamé. This was him scoring against his former club. Diamé had previously found the back of the Newcastle net for Hull in 2016 and 2014.

When Hull were relegated in the 2014/15 campaign, Newcastle had a win and a draw against them. In the 2-2 draw, Papiss Cisse scored a brace.
