Newcastle United are expected to receive a financial boost this summer as Lloyd Kelly edges closer to completing a permanent move to Juventus.

According to ChronicleLive, the conditions for Kelly’s loan switch to turn into a full transfer have already been met, with Newcastle likely to pocket around £20 million from the deal.

Signed on a free transfer last July, Kelly was quickly sent out to Turin as part of a loan agreement that included appearance-based clauses and an obligation to buy if Juventus secured European qualification – both of which now apply.

The transfer is all but done.

Newcastle transfer news: Lloyd Kelly to leave Newcastle permanently

While Kelly’s spell in Serie A has been inconsistent, Juventus remain committed to making the deal permanent. From Newcastle’s perspective, it is smart business. Turning a free agent into a £20 million profit inside 12 months will be considered a win, especially given the Magpies’ need to stay in line with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

But it also underlines the urgency in defence.

With Jamaal Lascelles sidelined long-term, Sven Botman recovering from a serious injury, and Fabian Schär now 32, Newcastle are in the market for a new central defender. The money raised from Kelly’s exit could now be reinvested directly into that position.

The club have already been linked with Jonathan Tah, Marc Guehi, and others as they look to rebuild a backline that has struggled this season.

As for Kelly, he will hope to turn a new page in Italy. The 26-year-old’s versatility – capable of playing centrally and at left-back – still gives him value, but he will need to improve his consistency if he wants to become a regular at Juventus.

All that remains now is for the deal to be formally completed – but for Newcastle, the next step is clear: reinvest wisely.
