Newcastle United had an underwhelming summer transfer window. Failing to land in key desired reinforcements, a right-footed center-back, and a right-wing prospect, the club had little to no positives from the transfer event. However, while it certainly cost Newcastle, depriving them of the squad strength they aimed for, it turns out that it eventually did affect one of their most talked about transfer prospects as well.

Having got star defenders Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles injured due to severe ACL injuries, Newcastle's priorities were clear: to sign center-back this summer. While searching for potential options, Marc Guehi, a right-footed 24-year-old center-back prodigy, seemed to be the ideal choice for them. Coming on the back of a star-making Euro campaign aligned with his heroics in the Premier League in the last few seasons, the Magpies decided to pursue him.
Unfortunately, while they did try to materialize a deal till the penultimate deadline day, the Magpies club walked off hearing a £75 million demand from Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi. However, as it has turned out, the duo of Dan Burn and Fabian Schar have looked good at the heart of Newcastle's defense, but certainly, Guehi's move could have been a major upgrade. But it feels that things haven't gone great for Guehi either.
Crystal Palace, who had finished midtable last season, have been struggling in the relegation zone since the 2024/25 season started. On top of that, Guehi's individual performances in the club's defense haven't been great either, with their unit having conceded 10 goals in 7 PL matchdays this season. Analyzing this scenario, Newcastle Club legend Alan Shearer suggested that a failed transfer move might have affected the Sengalese center-back's performance.
Shearer mentioned,
"“He hasn’t had a good start to the season, though; that’s the only problem, isn’t it? Whether the transfer speculation has affected him mentally or not, he hasn’t had a great start to the season with Palace.”"

While such a possibility seems much more significant considering a move to Newcastle might have been a dream transfer for Marc Guehi. However, as reports suggest, the Magpies club might reignite their interest in the center-back in January, though a lot will depend on the player's form at that time. It remains to be seen whether a move becomes possible in the future, but in case it starts aligning, Newcastle might get Guehi on a reduced transfer fee.
