After a successful season by Newcastle United, that saw the club lifting the Carabao Cup and finishing fifth in the Premier League, it was expected that they would go all out on signings this summer. However, we are into the last month of the transfer window and the club have managed to bring in just two major new signings, which include the permanent acquisition of Anthony Elanga and a season-long loan move for Aaron Ramsdale with an option to make it permanent.
Meanwhile, the Alexander Isak saga enters another day with no real certainty if he will stay or leave. The Magpies had already started looking at potential alternatives to lead their attack next season and had even launched an initial bid to bring RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. However, the first offer was rejected and Newcastle launched a follow-up improved bid of €90 million for the player.
It was widely believed that the Bundesliga club would accept the latest offer and the player would move to St James’ Park. But if reports are to be believed, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Fabrizio Romano has posted on X stating that Sesko has reached total agreement with Manchester United on personal terms, including a contract until June 2030. The Slovak striker wants to join United, and revealed his feeling yesterday. He never gave similar indication to other clubs. Club-to-club talks with RB Leipzig are in progress.
Newcastle target Benjamin Sesko decides to join Manchester United instead
This new snub will surely feel like salt on the wounds for the Magpies. Sesko will soon join the long list of players who have opted to sign for other clubs instead of Newcastle, despite the club qualifying for next season’s Champions League and having a really competitive squad.
Anyway, there’s little time left in the transfer window to ponder upon missed players. So the club will have to quickly move on to other options. Notably, Newcastle have also been linked with Sesko’s club teammate Lois Openda along with players like Yoane Wissa, Endrick, Randal Kolo Muani and Goncalo Ramos.
Newcastle are witnessing some pretty turbulent times in the transfer market. While missing out on Sesko is certainly a setback, it’s not the end of the road, and there are still plenty of quality options available. It remains to be seen who the club decide to go for next.
