Newcastle United's 2024/25 campaign so far has been completely an underwhelming one. Although they were off to some crucial points initially, going winless in the last 4 games hasn't helped their case, who now have slipped down to the 8th PL position. While certain expectations were from their recent home fixture against Brighton, the Magpies delivered yet another disappointing display, losing 0-1 at St. James.

With the club's big names going pretty silent so far in the season, apart from their serious injury issues, many things need to be improvised at the club to keep their top-4 chances alive. However, while clearly the above factors have been influential in affecting the club's performances, Alan Shearer believes that their poor summer transfer performance has a huge role in their current concerning scenario.

Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Howe opined that he believes manager Eddie Howe wasn't backed enough by Newcastle this season. Raising concern over the club's current squad strength, Howe said,

"“Are Newcastle any better this season than they were 18 months ago, and with the transfer windows they’ve had behind them? I would say probably not. I just feel as if they probably haven’t backed the manager as well as they should have.”"

Not to forget, ahead of the summer window, Howe had expressed his demands of a center-back reinforcement and a winger's signing quite clearly; however, he was handed almost the same roster as the season before. Moreover, that too didn't come that easy, as the Magpies club fans and the manager Howe himself were optimistic for at least Guehi's summer signing until the club decided to walk off from the player's deal.

Regarding the same, PL record scorer Alan Shearer believes that it couldn't be only due to PSR regulations that the directors decided to walk off, despite showing interest till £60M and even £65M bids. Shearer opined that the staff turnover came in at a crucial time against the club, disturbing their transfer plans, saying,

"“I think the turnover of personnel in the summer hasn’t helped. At the top of the club, with Amanda and Mehrdad leaving, the new director of football came in with Dan Ashworth leaving whenever he left.""

However, whatever happened can't be undone now, and even if it's the hard truth, Eddie Howe is compelled to operate with the existing players only, at least till the January window. But, it becomes crucially important for Newcastle to reinforce Howe's demanded roles—the center-back, right-wing, and even the striking position—if they want to remain in contention for a top-4 PL finish.
