The Premier League returns after the international break this weekend, with Eddie Howe hosting Newcastle vs Chelsea. The boss has received a boost.

Not much is going Newcastle’s way when it comes to injuries. In fact, Eddie Howe has almost a full starting eleven of players who are out with long-term injuries, with the midfield and defence being the key areas of concern for the English manager.

Luckily for Howe, though, he isn’t the only with injury woes as his competitor for the weekend, Mauricio Pochettino, is also suffering an injury crisis of his own.

The injury list for Chelsea looks like this, according to Sports Mole:

  • Ben Chilwell (ruled out)
  • Wesley Fofana (ruled out)
  • Carney Chukuemeka (ruled out)
  • Marcus Bettinelli (ruled out)
  • Christopher Nkunku (major doubt)
  • Trevoh Chalobah (major doubt)
  • Romeo Lavia (doubt)
  • Malo Gusto (doubt)
  • Levi Colwill (minor doubt)

Obviously, Chelsea have spent a fine fortune in recent seasons so their squad is inflated much more than ours. Therefore, their injury concerns are nowhere near as detrimental as our injury concerns, but it gives me some sense of comfort to know that we aren’t the only team with bad luck in this league.

Another important factor to consider ahead of this match is that we have a Champions League fixture to consider for midweek and it’s a big one. We travel to Paris to face PSG and it feels like a must-win game given our position in the league. Chelsea do not have the same conundrum, so they are more likely to name a full-strength eleven than us.
