A talkSPORT pundit has weirdly hit out at Miguel Almiron after his second-half cameo during Dortmund vs Newcastle in the Champions League.

It was a night to forget for Newcastle in the Champions League last night. They travelled to Germany in hopes of a win but they didn’t get out of first gear throughout the entirety of the match. Taking off my Newcastle spectacles, we didn’t deserve to win.

But the players also don’t deserve to be criticised. Neither should Eddie Howe – After all, we must bear in mind that we’re dealing with an injury crisis and to still be in with a chance of making it out of this Champions League group of death is impressive enough, in my books.

Perhaps the most shocking thing about yesterday, though, was the starting eleven. We’re very aware of the growing injury list and the need to rotate between competitions, particularly with that quick turnaround of fixtures. However, nobody expected both Anthony Gordon and Miguel Almiron to be benched.

Speaking of those two benched players, one of them has weirdly been subject to criticism from a talkSPORT pundit. As per Geordie Boot Boys, Jason Cundy has hit out at Miguel Almiron for his appearance from the bench last night, claiming “He didn’t really have the impact you hoped.”

While this is very true, I feel like we have to cut Miguel Almiron some slack here. After all, it’s not a coincidence that we had a lot more chances with him on the pitch. Furthermore, to come on with only 45 minutes to make an impact in a game as big as this, against competition as strong as Dortmund, it’s bound to be difficult to have an impact.
