Joe Willock hamstring and Achilles injury, August 2023
According to the Newcastle Chronicle (September 16, 2023), Joe Willock was almost over the hamstring injury which saw him ruled out towards the end of last season. However, suffering an Achilles problem sees the former Arsenal man out for longer than expected.
The report claims that Willock, who has missed the start of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, jetted off to Barcelona during the September international break to work on his fitness. Howe claimed that Willock is “looking good” but he is not near a full return yet. Of course, the aim for Howe is to get the talented midfielder back as soon as possible, but he won’t want to rush the process.
In the most recent update from Shields Gazette (September 22, 2023), Eddie Howe has confirmed that Joe Willock will be out injured “for another month”. Essentially, Willock won’t return until after the October international break.

Thankfully, Joe Willock recovered towards the end of October, eventually making his first start of the season for Newcastle against Man United in the EFL Cup – Marking his comeback with a goal!

It was a heartbreak for Joe Willock as he missed the final few matches of Newcastle’s terrific 2022/23 campaign. Thankfully, his peers still got the job done and they qualified for the Champions League without him. It was the game against Brighton, by which Newcastle won 4-1 at home, which saw Willock subbed off early in the second half through injury.

Joe Willock missed the final 3 games of the 2021/22 season with Newcastle. In a knee injury he picked up, Newcastle felt the effect as they lost by an embarrassing scoreline of 5-0 to the champions Manchester City. Then, Willock missed Newcastle beating his boyhood club Arsenal and ruining their chances of Champions League football. In the final game of the season, Willock’s teammates beat Burnley.

Willock missed one game against Wolves through a short-term knee injury. Luckily, Newcastle got the win without him, edging three points via a late penalty.
