Milan’s Sandro Tonali agrees to deal with Newcastle United
By Cade Cracas
Even though the summer transfer window has not officially opened yet, Newcastle United has finished off the month of June with a bang. As Newcastle is on the path to constantly strive to improve for the Champions League, it is essential to recruit top talents to St. James Park. One such player who has caught the attention of the football world is AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali.
On June 21st it was reported that Tonali agreed to a contract with the Magpies after he received notice that the club was willing to move on from him.
At just 23 years old, Tonali possesses immense potential and an impressive skill set.
As a versatile midfielder, he can thrive in various positions, including defensive midfield, central midfield and even as an attacking playmaker. His energy and adaptability with Milan made him an ideal asset for any team to acquire this offseason.
He also offers an exceptional passing range and accuracy that helps any team maintain possessions and advance the ball forward.
With his vision and technical prowess, he can orchestrate Newcastle’s attacks, threading pinpoint through balls and delivering accurate long-range passes. Especially with the Magpies having standout forwards in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, a need for a midfielder like that is important.
His ability to control the tempo of the game and distribute the ball effectively would enhance Newcastle’s creativity and create an offensive threat from midfield that the team lacked in the 2022-23 season.
Alongside his impressive skillset, he offers a touch of accountability and leadership into the Magpies locker room.
Despite his young age, he has captained both Brescia, his former club before AC Milan, and the Italian U21 national team.
Newcastle could benefit greatly from his leadership qualities both on and off the pitch. His ability to inspire teammates and guide the younger players would help to foster a winning mentality within the squad. If the team was willing to keep Elliot Anderson around and keep him in the rotation, Toneli’s playstyle would help him grow as a player.
So, this transfer seems like an ideal fit for the Magpies.
Newcastle most recently reached out to Milan and offered them €70 million for the midfielder, but Milan sent a counter-offer of €80 million. That means that if the Magpies end up accepting the counter, the team would secure Tonali.
