Newcastle United is in need of finding a new, consistent and prominent left-back for their Champions League roster.

In recent months, Arsenal’s defender Kieran Tierney has become a name that has floated around the Magpies as a potential fit in their squad. With the team coming off a stellar 2022-23 season, they may be in the market for smart fits instead of major moves, and Tierney could be that smart fit.

As the 2022-23 season has come to a close, Tierney played in just 27 games and started in only six of them. That comes after Arsenal brought in Oleksandr Zinchenko as the starter this past season, forcibly moving the young prospect out of the spotlight.

The Scotsman is often remarked as one of the best in his position in the Premier League, but Arsenal has been deadset on having Zinchenko as their starter for the near future.

With so much of his career in front of him, Tierney needs to find a new place to call home.

That’s where St. James Park enters the picture.

Newcastle United has a fairly whole squad, but their one lackluster position is left back. The team trotted out Dan Burn, who is a native center-back, at left-back for the majority of this past season and with him out on the pitch the Magpies formulated little growth from their left side.

Burn is a naturally slower and more physical defender, that is why he thrives in the middle.

If the team were to make a move to bring in Tierney, they would instantly bolster the quick play on the back line, while also helping the offense thrive more consistently.

This past season he contributed an assist, and in previous campaigns, he has added on anywhere from three to seven assists per year. That contribution to a team is something that Newcastle is looking to find.

With Newcastle utilizing captain Kieran Trippier on the right, the team has a lot of strength on both offense and defense on that side of the field. If they could bring in Tierney to counterbalance the side, they could easily become a more sound team.

Recent rumors have circulated, proving that these discussions have ramped up as Newcastle have become convinced they’ll sign Tierney this summer.

While the Magpies look to utilize the team’s Champions League status in their favor, it could help incentivize him to make the move to St. James Park.

His most recent transfer market status sees his negotiation mark at around £30 million, which can be easily met by Newcastle. With the team having over £250 million to spend in the offseason, this would barely be a dent into the endless pot of funds it seems the club may have.
