Newcastle United gears up for relegation-battling Leicester City
By Cade Cracas
As Newcastle United prepares for their second-to-last game of the 2022-23 Premier League season, their coming contest may be more difficult than it looks from a birds-eye view.
On Monday, May 22, the Magpies will be going up against the relegation-battling Leicester City Foxes. The Foxes, who won the Premier League in the 2015-16 season, have had a drastic fall from grace.
This coming contest is a crucial one for both sides.
Newcastle United is looking to clinch their appearance in the Champions League for the 2023-24 season, and to do so they need just two more points through their remaining two games of the season.
But, Leicester City, sit in 19th place in the league table, three points outside of the bottom three. Ahead of them sit Leeds United with two and Everton with three.
Southampton sits at the bottom of the table with 25, and Nottingham Forrest sits in 16th, meaning that the only available positions for Leicester to finish in are 17-19th. Leicester City will either barely make it out of the relegation zone, or fall within those final two spots.
With so much on the line, the Foxes will be in dire need of a win against the red-hot Magpies, which will be no easy task.
Newcastle United is coming off of a momentum-driving victory at home in St. James Park against Brighton. In that victory, the team was able to showcase incredible play in a 4-1 victory that rose each member of the ToonArmy to their feet in excitement.
The hot foot in that game was Callum Wilson, who has continued to lead the offense each time he steps onto the pitch. Heading into Monday’s drawing, he’s recorded 18 goals on the season which places him in fifth place in the entire league for most goals.
Fortunately for Newcastle, they remain at home once again aginst Leicester City, and to have a home crowd behind them as they could potentially clinch Champions League play for the first time since the 2002-03 season would be something special.
Throughout the season having a home crowd has been important for the Magpies as when they need the support to turn the game back around they’ve been able to receive that, and when they are dominating an opponent the momentum only continues to build.
With so much on the line, the stadium is going to be rocking as the season dwindles to a close.
