Newcastle United are in the market for another winger to improve their creativity on the ball in the final third. In their last game against Bournemouth (1-1) at St. James’ Park, despite dominating possession, Newcastle United struggled when the Cherries defended in large numbers.
The Magpies’ front office looked at multiple targets to fill the void on the right flank, but were met with resistance all summer. There is a lot of talk about pursuing James Maddison once more in January, which would be smart business to become legitimate European contenders, but there is additional good news that involves a new development at Chelsea.
Newcastle United put a lot of effort in their attempt to land United States international Christian Pulisic as a loanee from Chelsea in the summer, but the London giants refused anything other than a permanent deal. It was unclear how much Chelsea was asking for his services, but it was enough for Newcastle United to back down.
According to a new report from the Shields Gazette (via Calciomercato), the narrative is changing as Chelsea are now willing to take a £28M loss on Pulisic if teams submit bids in the region of £30M. It remains to be seen how Pulisic will fit into Graham Potter’s system, but the Chelsea’s owner seems ready to do business.
£30M for Pulisic would be a great long-term investment for Newcastle United as he is only 24.
Pulisic is a talented winger who is capable of influencing the outcome of games if he is in the right system. His composure on the ball combined with his quick feet and accurate deliveries into the box would be a welcome addition to Eddie Howe’s 4-3-3 system.
Miguel Almiron currently occupies the starting role on the right wing, but aside from his lethal pace and good pressing, the Paraguayan does not offer much in the final third. Time and time again Almiron has hesitated to take golden chances in front of goal because he is mainly a one-footed player.
Pulisic is a more dynamic threat on the ball who commands respect from defenders as his next move is unpredictable. With 8 assists and 19 goals in 80 Premier League appearances, Pulisic would certainly be an upgrade who can bring more creativity and meaningful playmaking to the Toon.
This transfer saga is one to keep an eye on, but if Chelsea are willing to part ways with Pulisic for that price, Newcastle United would be foolish to pass up that opportunity.
