Newcastle United’s performance against Arsenal was proof of how far they have come since the arrival of Eddie Howe as manager. The Magpies were absolutely brilliant as they got a 2-0 win over the Gunners. A goal from Bruno Guimaraes and an own goal from Ben White were enough to seal all three points for them, and one could argue that the home side were better in almost all aspects of the game.

Of course, with very little left to play for, most people would have expected Newcastle United to look off the pace against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side, who had it all to play for with Champions League qualification up for grabs.

The 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United leaves them in a very difficult spot to say the least. Realistically, a point more will be enough to book Tottenham Hotspur’s spot in the Champions League for next season and make sure that their North London rivals finish at fifth.

Amidst all this, Arteta made a brutally honest admission after the match. As tweeted out by Miles Starforth, the Arsenal manager said:

"‘Newcastle were 100 times better than us in every department from beginning to end.’"

Thus, it looks like Newcastle United have ended up having a huge impact on the top four race. Their win means that Chelsea have booked their place in next season’s Champions League, while Tottenham Hotspur are pretty much on the brink of it. On the other hand, Arsenal have definitely come out on the wrong end of the result.

This has been Arsenal’s most promising season in a long, long time and even then they might not be finishing in the top four.

Newcastle United will be hoping that they are in the mix for European spots come next season and if they are able to strengthen adequately in the summer, there is no reason that they won’t be.
