Coming into the game against Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United must have been confident of their chances of getting something out of their trip to London. After all, The Magpies have been one of the most in-form teams in all of Europe since the turn of the year. Form went out of the window though as Antonio Conte’s side handed them a 5-1 defeat. And it is safe to say that Alan Shearer was not pleased with the performance from Eddie Howe’s side.

It is easy to forget after that result, but it was Newcastle United who had taken the lead on the day through Fabian Schar. But Tottenham Hotspur would equalise before the break, and then, they scored four unanswered goals in the second half.

It was a terrible result for Newcastle United to say the least, who now have lost three on the trot. And while they are still comfortably above the relegation zone, doubts will start to creep in, if they don’t get back to winning ways soon.

Following the game, Shearer described Newcastle United as ‘a shambles’ as he tweeted out:

Alan Shearer not impressed with Newcastle United after 5-1 defeat vs Tottenham Hotspur

It is safe to say that this was the worst Newcastle United performance in months, and by quite some distance. It was very reminiscent of their displays from the first half of the campaign.

Thus, it is safe to say that it has given Howe something to think about. While it is way too early to panic, as The Magpies sit 9 points above the relegation zone, a win or two would not hurt them at all.

The club have suffered three straight defeats, against Chelsea, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively. And unfortunately for them, their run of fixtures will not get any easier moving forward. The Magpies have games against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and other tough teams coming up.
