Newcastle United trailed for more than 90 minutes today at Anfield vs. Liverpool after Mo Salah scored in the opening minutes. But, when the club needed an equalizer late, a familiar hero stepped up.
Just like he did vs. Spurs and West Ham, Joe Willock was able to come off the bench and score a massive goal. He leveled things in second-half stoppage time to steal a point for the Magpies on the road. His late strike deflected off Fabinho and caught Allison going the opposite direction.
It was the second time that Newcastle found the back of the net in stoppage time. Minutes earlier, Callum Wilson tapped the ball in, but the rebound of his initial shot touched off his arm before he converted. In a harsh decision, VAR ruled the goal out because of a handball.
Willock’s goal was able to level the score largely due to Martin Dubravka. The NUFC goalkeeper made eight saves with some coming at close range vs. Liverpool’s world-class attacking players. Just like Karl Darlow in the reverse fixture, Dubravka kept his team in the match.
Joe Willock scored another late goal to secure a point for Newcastle United vs. Liverpool.
Allan Saint-Maximin dazzled at moments on the ball and Sean Longstaff had an overall positive performance.
With the point, Newcastle are now on 36 points and level for the moment with Southampton. Steve Bruce’s side is unbeaten in their last four matches.
What’s Next?
Newcastle United return to St. James’ Park next weekend to host Arsenal. The Gunners suffered a late defeat vs. Everton yesterday and will play Villarreal in the Europa League on Thursday. Because he is on loan from the club, Willock won’t be able to play against Arsenal.
