In the grand scheme of things, Newcastle United are a well-respected club among Premier League supporters. They are known for their passionate fan base, historical players like Alan Shearer, and even the movie, Goal!. Despite all of that, neutral Premier League supporters seem to be rooting for the Magpies to be relegated.

No, Newcastle United didn’t suddenly become a villain across English football. For the EPL fans, it’s more about who they are competing with in the relegation battle.

Yesterday was a perfect example as Newcastle played in a boring, scoreless draw vs. West Brom. Immediately after, Fulham were getting up and down the pitch in a 1-0 win at Anfield vs. Liverpool to pull level on points with Brighton and within one of NUFC.

If a neutral fan had the choice to watch Newcastle United or Fulham for most of this season, they would go with Scott Parker’s side. With exciting young players like Josh Maja and Ademola Lookman starring on loan, Fulham play a fun brand of soccer, a top-ten side in shots in the Premier League.

Completely contrary to that, Newcastle are tough to watch, even for the Toon Army. Steve Bruce often has the club defending deep and holding minimal possession. The club has exciting players like Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin, but the fans feel like they are misused in Bruce’s restrictive system.

Neutral Premier League fans are rooting for Newcastle United to get relegated. But, the question is: why?

Another angle for the fans hoping that Newcastle goes down would be the increased likelihood that their club could sign top NUFC players like Almiron, Saint-Maximin, or Callum Wilson. In 2016, Gini Wijnaldum and Andros Townsend departed Newcastle as the club’s relegation was secured.

The relegation battle will be hotly contested between Fulham, Newcastle United, and Brighton down the stretch. For Premier League fans that enjoy watching attractive soccer in the top flight, they will be rooting for Newcastle to fail.
