After two losses last week vs. Premier League powers on the road, Newcastle United had a chance to pick up points at home vs. Wolves today. But, just like the previous four Premier League matches between the sides, this fixture ended level with goals from Jamaal Lascelles and Ruben Neves.

Newcastle controlled a lot of the early action with possession and shots. But, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock weren’t able to convert quality chances. The match went into the break with a 0-0 scoreline at St. James’ Park.

In the second half, Lascelles rose up to head home a cross from substitute Ryan Fraser. After consistently providing goals in recent seasons, this was a rare goal from a Newcastle central defender.

But, with the Magpies having to shuffle around their players and tactics due to injury exits from Almiron, Allan Saint-Maximin, and Emil Krafth, they conceded an equalizer. Neves was given far too much space in the box and his header was too strong for a one-handed save attempt from Martin Dubravka.

Newcastle United give up a second-half lead to finish level with Wolves.

Joelinton had the best chance to find a winner for Newcastle. Jacob Murphy dribbled through the Wolves’ defense and served up the Brazilian striker right in front of goal, but his effort was kept out by Rui Patricio and Romain Saiss.

In the final minutes, Dubravka was somehow able to keep a header out from point-blank range to keep things level. Despite Wolves pushing for a winner on the road, there were no additional goals to be scored.

Overall, it was a much-needed point for the Magpies, but there will be frustration about giving up a lead and concern for the crucial players leaving with injuries. Newcastle United go four points clear of Fulham before Scott Parker’s side plays Crystal Palace tomorrow.
