Newcastle United currently reside within just three points of Fulham for the final spot of safety on the Premier League table after their loss on Sunday. Over the last few weeks, the Magpies have had to deal with top clubs like Everton, Chelsea, and Manchester United.

After struggling during that tough stretch of matches, Newcastle fans are excited for the club to face a less formidable opponent with Wolves next up on the schedule. But, despite their place on the table, the stats show that Wolves are far from an easy matchup for Steve Bruce’s side.

Wolves were promoted following the 2017-18 season in which they won the Championship title. Since then, they have played Newcastle United in five Premier League matches. The Magpies have zero wins in those fixtures.

The 2018-19 season saw Wolves benefit from a late goal in each of the matchups. First, Matt Doherty scored the match-winner in the 90th minute at St. James’ Park. The reverse fixture that season ended with a 90th-minute equalizer from Willy Boly.

Stats indicate Newcastle United fans should be wary of this weekend’s matchup vs. Wolves.

Last season, both matches ended with 1-1 draws. That trend continued this season when Newcastle United got an equalizer from Jacob Murphy to secure another 1-1 result at Molineux Stadium in October.

The all-time series favors Wolves, too. They’ve won 41 of the 100 meetings between the clubs, compared to 32 victories for Newcastle. Despite those numbers, Newcastle controlled the early Premier League fixtures in the series, unbeaten in the first six EPL matchups from 2003-2012.

This weekend, Newcastle United will look to get back to that previous success vs. 11th-place Wolves as they fight for their Premier League safety. A win would mark a turnaround for the club and an end to their struggles vs. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
