Newcastle United were hit with some major, negative news yesterday when three players – Callum Wilson, Javier Manquillo, and Fabian Schar – were all officially ruled out of action for eight weeks. The biggest blow in that update is Wilson’s two-month absence.
The England international has been a lethal force in the final third for Newcastle United with ten goals and five assists, which equates to him being directly involved in 60% of the team’s goals this season. Defensive consistency is still a problem for the Toon, but they have found their rhythm offensively with their new 4-3-3 shape.
The majority of fans are hoping to see Dwight Gayle as Wilson’s direct replacement over the next two months. Gayle ended last term on a high note with four goals, and he’s had a positive impact in his severely limited time on the pitch this season as well.
For some reason that no one can explain, Steve Bruce seems to value Andy Carroll and Joelinton over Gayle, but he would be foolish not to give Gayle a chance to show his true colors with only five months remaining on his contract.
Start Dwight Gayle and stick with the 4-3-3 formation… please!
Whether or not Bruce selects Gayle is one area of concern among the Toon Army, but the other issue is hoping Bruce will not hit the panic button and revert to defending with nine bodies behind the ball. The Magpies have sufficient talent, especially in midfield, to keep pressing high and creating chances in double figures.
It actually would not come as a surprise if Gayle finished the campaign with seven or eight goals to his name as a result of the support he would receive in the final third.
In order for Newcastle United to stay competitive against teams and defeat those below them they need to stick with this attacking style of play.
