An upset win and a blowout loss for Newcastle vs. Man Utd last season

Newcastle United split the season series vs. Manchester United in 2019-20.

Following the international break, Newcastle United return to Premier League play at home vs. Manchester United on Saturday. The Magpies picked up a big win before the break while Man Utd were blown out by Jose Mourinho and Spurs, putting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer squarely on the hot seat.

Before the clubs meet for the first time this season, we look back on two very different matches between them last season.

10/6/2019: Newcastle United 1, Manchester United 0

After getting thrashed by Leicester City, Newcastle United hosted Man Utd at St. James’ Park. In that match, young Matty Longstaff would get his first start in the black and white.

The teenager responded with a goal in the second half, assisted by Jetro Willems, to give the Magpies a win. The match also marked the first time as a manager that Steve Bruce defeated the club he used to captain.

12/26/2019: Manchester United 4, Newcastle United 1

For the second time last season, Matty Longstaff scored vs. Man Utd. But, this time, his goal wouldn’t be the only one in the match. His 17th-minute strike was quickly wiped out by goals from Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood less than ten minutes later.

Marcus Rashford scored the third goal for Man. U shortly before the half and Martial completed his brace to give the hosts a 4-1 win on Boxing Day. It was a lazy defensive effort from the Magpies and a wake-up call during the busy festive season.
