Newcastle United are unlikely to sign Celtic star this summer

Newcastle United are interested in signing Celtic’s top scorer, but the Frenchman is keen on staying in Scotland for at least one more season.
Newcastle United are focused on preparing for their game against Sheffield United next weekend, but a lot is happening behind the scenes. The takeover of the club is still in pending status, but Steve Nickson and his recruitment team have been scouting players across Europe.
It is unclear who will own the club next season, and, as a result, a wide range of players have been linked with moves to St. James’ Park. There is no real sense of direction at Newcastle United, but one player who has been linked with the Magpies for the last few months is Celtic star Odsonne Edouard.
After another impressive season for the Scottish giants, Newcastle United have made the young striker a top transfer target. While playing in the Premier League would be a major step up for Edouard’s career, the Toon have received a blow in their hunt for the striker.
In a recent interview for the Daily Mail, Edouard would like to stay in Glasgow for at least one more season. Next season could be a historic campaign for Celtic as they aim to achieve something no other club has done: win ten consecutive league titles.
Celtic and their rivals Rangers have both won nine consecutive titles, but Edouard is keen on playing an integral role in what could be a special season in the Scottish top flight. The Frenchman found the back of the net 22 times in 27 league games this season, and that stellar form earned him the Player of the Year award from the Scottish Football Writers’ Association.
Newcastle United are desperate to upgrade their front line this summer. The attacking quartet comprised of Joelinton, Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto have only combined to score one goal this season.
In the eyes of Steve Bruce and Steve Nickson, Edouard is a young, dynamic striker who is capable of scoring goals in double figures for Newcastle United. The club has also been linked to notable strikers Edinson Cavani and Michy Batshuayi, so it remains to be seen what route the Magpies will take.
Should Newcastle United take a chance on Odsonne Edouard this summer or should the club pursue a player with more experience in Europe’s most competitive leagues? Let us know in the comments section below.
