Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan partnered up for Newcastle United’s relegation and promotion back to the Premier League.

Continuing our series on Newcastle United Duos, we take a look at the tandem of Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll.

After coming up through the youth system, Andy Carroll made his first team debut in November 2006. Just about two years later, Kevin Nolan arrived from Bolton Wanderers in January 2009. During that 2008-09 Premier League season, Carroll appeared in 14 matches while Nolan played in 11 after he joined the Magpies and they combined for three goals and two assists.

Unfortunately, that season ended with Newcastle United finishing 18th on the table and heading down to the Championship via relegation.

It was that season in the second division that saw Carroll and Nolan play starring roles for Chris Hughton. Carroll paired with Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands up top while Nolan was a monster in the midfield. Carroll registered 17 goals and 12 assists in the Championship. In 44 league matches, Nolan also scored 17 goals and added four assists.

The Magpies broke 100 points and won the Championship, earning their way back into the Premier League. That season would be Carroll and Nolan’s last and only full season together.

Wearing the number nine in black and white, Carroll scored 11 goals and had seven assists in only 19 Premier League matches with Newcastle. He departed the club in January in a big-money move to Liverpool. Nolan, serving as the captain at times in the season, scored 12 times and assisted twice. He left for West Ham United in the summer of 2011. The two former Magpies would reunite with West Ham when Carroll joined Nolan in 2013.
