The Recap

After a blowout loss to Manchester United on Boxing Day, Newcastle United looked to get back on track as they hosted Everton. Unfortunately, within the first quarter-hour, the Magpies found themselves down on the scoreboard.

A deflected shot from the edge of the box found Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the striker pushed the ball past Martin Dubravka. That goal was sandwiched between two quality chances for Steve Bruce’s side. First, Miguel Almiron got behind the defense and fought against contact from the defense and couldn’t convert. After Everton had taken the lead, Joelinton had an opportunity to level things, but his shot went wide.

Andy Carroll put the ball in the back of the net at the half-hour mark, but he was ruled offside. The Newcastle striker would eventually contribute to the opening goal for the Magpies, heading a free-kick towards Fabian Schar, who knocked the ball in during the second half.

After Everton had a goal of their own waved off due to offside, Calvert-Lewin would score the winner after slipping past Schar in the middle of the box. Newcastle United could not equalize this time and it was a win for Everton by way of Calvert-Lewin’s brace.
