Toon Takeaways from Newcastle’s stoppage time win vs. Chelsea
Newcastle United took all three points at home today vs. Chelsea.
In a match where they were second best for almost its entirety, Newcastle United scored late and took the win. Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross in stoppage time found Isaac Hayden and he headed the ball past Kepa for the 1-0 victory.
Hayden the Hero
An unlikely man to step up in front of goal, Isaac Hayden did the job for the Magpies as he headed home the winner vs. Chelsea. This team has had performances like this throughout the season with a lack of scoring from their forwards and Hayden was the latest to send the Toon Army into a tizzy with a key goal.
Lazy Long Passing
Rather than make an extra pass or take an extra dribble or two to open things up, Newcastle kept sending long, inaccurate passes forward. There were chances to take advantage on the break, but the poor connections in the long passing ended a lot of those opportunities. Jonjo Shelvey was confident in his passing, but his execution didn’t match his assertiveness.
Get Well Willems
Exactly what Newcastle wanted to avoid seeing, another key player taken out by an injury. Early on, Jetro Willems suffered what looked like a considerable knee injury and needed to be stretchered off. This run of injuries just doesn’t seem to end, as the club brought a couple of players back, they lost another.

- That’s a cheeky result from Steve Bruce’s side. Newcastle United finished with 30% possession and two shots on target, but that’s all they needed to steal three points from the better side, Chelsea.
- Chelsea, and Newcastle’s lack of attacking plan, limited the impact of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin throughout the match. Both had some chances on the ball, but they didn’t get enough opportunities and the Blues shut them down when they needed to. But, when the moment was there late, ASM delivered a lovely cross to Isaac Hayden for the winner.
- Really staunch defending from the Newcastle trio in the middle today. Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez locked things down and Ciaran Clark was steady. Outside of the rare chance from Tammy Abraham, they cut down the air for the Chelsea attack and helped Martin Dubravka keep the clean sheet.
- Joelinton had two key chances in this one. His first-half header was so close to a goal for Newcastle, but it clipped the crossbar. Late in the second half, the Magpies had a rare moment in the attack and it ended with Joelinton rushing a shot wide.
Okay, What’s Next?
Newcastle United will travel to Goodison Park on Tuesday to face Everton. Carlo Ancelotti’s side drew 1-1 vs. West Ham today.
