Newcastle United will look to emulate their performance from October at Old Trafford tomorrow in order to claim the double over Manchester United.

Newcastle United are coming off a hard-fought victory over Crystal Palace and they hope that can generate some momentum over the festive period. Manchester United are coming off an embarrassing loss against Watford and are hoping to make up for it with a win against the Magpies.

Where They Stand

  • Manchester United: 8th, 25 points (6W, 7D, 5L)
  • Newcastle United: 9th, 25 points (7W, 4D, 7L)

Analysis

It feels odd writing this, but the situation is what it is: Newcastle United can claim the double over Manchester United with a win tomorrow. The last time these two teams met, Manchester United were without a few key players, but that will not be the case tomorrow.

Miguel Almiron found the back of the net for the first time in his Premier League career against Crystal Palace on Saturday, and fans are now hoping he will score on a regular basis. Steve Bruce hinted that he plans to move Almiron into a more central role, so it will be interesting to see how effective the Paraguayan will be up the middle against Manchester United.

It is difficult to predict the side that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will deploy. Had the Red Devils handled business against Watford they might have rested some key players for other games during this busy period, but it looks like he will be forced to play his best players. Another loss to an inferior side, especially at home, could see good ol’ Ole pack his bags and open the door for a new manager, possibly Mauricio Pochettino.

More from Newcastle Toons

Marcus Rashford is the most likely player to cause significant problems for Martin Dubravka and the back-line in front of him. With ten goals and four assists to his name this season, Rashford has been directly involved in 53% of the Red Devils’ goals. In order for the Toon to stand a decent chance of stealing a positive result at Old Trafford the back-line must be aware of Rashford’s movements and cut off service aimed towards him.

Predictions

Carson and I both agree that this will be a difficult game for Newcastle United. The home side is expected to play with urgency and set the tone of the game from the opening whistle. Carson doesn’t think the Magpies will cope with the constant pressure from the Red Devils, but I actually think Bruce’s troops will stun everyone with a minimal victory.
