Newcastle United claimed all three points against Crystal Palace thanks to a late goal from Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle United were expected to win against an injury-hit Crystal Palace side and they managed to get the job in the final minutes of the game. Miguel Almiron stepped up for the Toon when he was needed the most, but how did the rest of the squad fare today?
Man of the Match

Miguel Almiron

  • Almiron was one of the most active players on the pitch today. The Paraguayan international spread the ball around well, found open running lanes out wide and the up the middle, and he scored an impressive goal that sent Newcastle United into the top ten.

Solid Showing

Martin Dubravka

  • Martin Dubravka rescued Newcastle United on three occasions this afternoon. His quick reactions and steady hands kept the Magpies in the game and gifted the team with yet another clean sheet.

Andy Carroll

  • Andy Carroll’s work rate was unmatched by any player on the pitch. He wasn’t able to create any chances for himself, but he did complete the assist to Miguel Almiron with a perfectly placed header.

Jonjo Shelvey

  • Jonjo Shelvey had a significant impact in the middle of the park for Newcastle United. With the ball at his feet, Shelvey orchestrated multiple attacks, switched the field with precision, and provided offensive creativity, which was lacking last weekend.

Javier Manquillo

  • Javier Manquillo impressed as a starter once again. The Spaniard did well to stay in front of Wilfried Zaha for most of the game, made some dangerous runs down the flank and did well to deliver some curling crosses.

The Back Three

  • Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Florian Lejeune did well to frustrate Wilfried Zaha and Jordan Ayew for most of the afternoon. Most importantly, their decisive tackles and quick clearances led to a clean sheet.

Mediocre Magpies

Paul Dummett

  • Paul Dummett put in a good shift, but his poor crosses, which were either too weak or overhit, limited the impact of Andy Carroll and Joelinton in the penalty area.

Joelinton

  • Joelinton was expected to have a big game today against a vulnerable defense, but he failed to threaten Vicente Guaita’s goal. The Brazilian did well to hold the ball up and completed some great passes, but he didn’t create any chances.

Isaac Hayden

  • Isaac Hayden started the game off well, but he seemed uncomfortable playing higher up the pitch as a result of Steve Bruce deploying two strikers who needed constant support. As usual, Hayden won duels and recovered the ball, but his offensive contribution was minimal.

The Substitutes

Sean Longstaff (63′)

  • Sean Longstaff came on for Isaac Hayden, but he did not do anything out of the ordinary. His fresh legs helped Newcastle United defensively, but he did not organize any attacks going forward.

Dwight Gayle (77′)

  • Dwight Gayle only had 13 minutes to work with and wasn’t able to do much in that time. The best thing Gayle did as a substitute was free up space for others behind him as he forced at least one defender to follow him around.

DeAndre Yedlin (stoppage time)
