A look at how the shorthanded Newcastle United squad performed in their loss vs. Burnley.

Without four starters from the Southampton match, Newcastle United struggled in a 1-0 defeat to Burnley today. How did each player perform? Check out our player rankings from the away loss.

Top for the Toon (Great performance)

Did you watch a different match than we did? There were no great performances for Newcastle United today.

Solid Showing (Positive play but lacking something)

Javier Manquillo: Another stellar performance from the right back. He exerted a lot of energy and effort up and down the right flank and tried to help get involved in the attack.

Joelinton: While he wasn’t a revelation on the left side, Joelinton looked to be a bit more comfortable than in his recent poor performances having the responsibility and isolation of playing as the number nine. He was willing to dribble at defenders and had a lovely ball from the right wing that should have been an assist to Dwight Gayle.

Federico Fernandez: He made some crucial defensive plays and was hard done by the no-call leading to the Burnley goal.

Paul Dummett: Always a willing defender, he did well in central defense before pushing out wide left once Jetro Willems subbed off.

Isaac Hayden: He was active and involved for Newcastle United, especially trying to work his way into the attack.

Mediocre Magpies (Disappointing display)

Sean Longstaff: A major blown opportunity for the youngster. He was finally back in the starting XI with Shelvey out and he turned in a stinker. His deliveries on set pieces were horrible and he just wasn’t himself in distribution from the middle of the park. He also had a terrible giveaway that almost iced the game away.

Christian Atsu: Another player that wasted a chance today. Starting on the wing with Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron out, Atsu did not play with the pace and courage that those two players normally do. He was too passive when running at defenders and his decision not to shoot after Andy Carroll set him up in the first half proved costly.

Martin Dubravka: Despite making a big stop to keep it 1-0 in the second half, he needed to do much better on the lone goal.

Dwight Gayle: The match should have been 1-1 when Joelinton put the ball on a platter for the substitute striker, but he scuffed the chance and couldn’t step up when his club needed him.

Fabian Schar: He looks like he’s still working his way back to his normal form and he was outmuscled by Chris Wood on the opening goal.

Next. Can NUFC manage without Saint-Maximin for a month?. dark

N/A for NUFC (Not good, not bad, not applicable)

Yoshinori Muto: Subbed on late and made very little impact.

Jetro Willems: It was an average shift for the left back, but he clearly missed the attacking partnership with Saint-Maximin.

Andy Carroll: He could have been in Solid Showing, but that early miss was a big one. Carroll worked his butt off today for the Magpies. He contested every ball in the air, set up Christian Atsu well, and tried to command the troops as captain today.
