The Recap
Some matches are more fun to recap than others. This one is one of the least enjoyable to recap this season. It started off bad, turned good, then ended disastrously.
On Wolves’ opening goal, DeAndre Yedlin and Jamaal Lascelles failed to communicate or close down space for Jota. Less than ten minutes later, Salomon Rondon would have a major sequence for the Toon. The striker hit the frame of the goal on a free kick, but the rebound was cleared outside the area by the Wolves’ defense. Rondon chased the ball down and fired in a lovely cross, which Ayoze Perez headed home to level things up.

A halftime substitution would prove crucial as Federico Fernandez was subbed off with a calf injury and replaced by Javier Manquillo. This move pushed Yedlin into central defense. It was playing there that Yedlin made a poor touch that was intercepted by Jota. Rather than battle to get back in front of the Wolves attacker, Yedlin pulled him down and received a deserved red card.
Despite the disadvantage of playing most of the second half down a man, Newcastle United did not back down. Christian Atsu was especially dangerous, but he could not find a surprise go-ahead goal.
After an unsuccessful Newcastle corner, Wolves launched a lethal counter-attack. Aided by a jogging Kenedy, Matt Doherty was unmarked at the far post and was able to bury the stoppage-time winner.
This was the most frustrating loss of a tough December for the Toon.
