After a big win on Tuesday, Newcastle United were dropped by Spurs in our FIFA 19 simulation.

Newcastle United get back into action after an exciting deadline day when they travel to face Spurs later today. The Magpies will be looking for a third straight Premier League victory.

For the Newcastle United lineup, we went with the exact same lineup that defeated Manchester City. That gives the Toon a 5-4-1 formation featuring Dubravka, Yedlin, Schar, Lascelles, Lejeune, Ritchie, Atsu, Longstaff, Hayden, Perez, and Rondon. The club is still without Karl Darlow, Mo Diame, Paul Dummett, Rob Elliot, Ki, Joselu, Yoshinori Muto, and Jonjo Shelvey. Miguel Almiron is still waiting on his work visa, but Antonio Barreca will be in the squad.

Christian Eriksen nearly started the match for Spurs the way Sergio Aguero started Tuesday’s match for City. Less than a minute into the action, he fired a shot from outside the area that brushed the crossbar before flying into the stands. Unfortunately for Newcastle United, the close call was a foreshadowing of a goal shortly after. Eriksen played Fernando Llorente through in the 10th minute and the forward beat Martin Dubravka with a quality strike.

More from Newcastle Toons

Throughout the first half, the Spurs central defense did well to limit Salomon Rondon’s touches and not allow him to get involved in the attack. Nearly all of the action during the first 45 minutes came in the Tottenham attacking half. In the 40th minute, Moussa Sissoko put his former club behind by two with a goal from close range.

At the break, Newcastle United could only claim 24% of possession and one shot that went well wide from distance.

Kenedy was the first man off the bench, replacing an ineffective Christian Atsu. Unfortunately, no matter what move he made, Rafa Benitez could not turn this one around. In the 2-0 loss, Newcastle United were outshot 19 to two. They also only completed 67% of their passes.

It was a frustrating end to a positive week for the Toon.
