In a scrappy, injury-filled match, Newcastle United secured their first win of the Premier League season.

At last, we have a win for Newcastle United this campaign. The Magpies were able to defeat Watford 1-0 at St. James’ Park, courtesy of an Ayoze Perez header. We take a deeper look at the big day for Rafa Benitez’s men.

Top Toons

Ki Sung-yueng: While needing to replace an injured Jonjo Shelvey is unfortunate, the South Korean midfielder was special in his substitute appearance. He slowed the match down and helped Newcastle United control possession. His free kick assist on Ayoze Perez’s goal was pinpoint accurate as well.

Ayoze Perez: His first goal of the season was a massive one.

Kenedy: The winger provided a few quality deliveries into the area, but his biggest contribution was his tackle on Andre Gray. He raced back to make the sliding challenge the moment Gray was lining up to equalize.

Mediocre Magpies

Yoshinori Muto: Before leaving moments before halftime, Muto was not crisp enough in the final third. He had a few chances to create opportunities, but he either hesitated or made the wrong pace.

Salomon Rondon: While his work rate and energy were good, the striker didn’t provide the finishing touch for the Magpies. He is expected to provide goalscoring and simply being an all-around decent performer up top without goals isn’t going to be good enough.

Mohamed Diame: It wasn’t his worst performance, but he was a bit clumsy in his tackling and passing again.

More from Newcastle Toons

It is never a good thing when you have to use every one of your substitutes on injured players. Let’s hope none of the injuries are serious because they involve a couple of the most important pieces to this roster (Lascelles and Shelvey).

Thankfully for Newcastle United, Watford was not clinical at all today. They squandered a few high-quality chances, finishing with 12 first-half shots and only one on target. There were a couple chances in the final minutes and they were not capitalized on.

HUGE fan of Fabian Schar getting into the face of the Watford players for shouting at a downed DeAndre Yedlin. While it did appear Yedlin was making more of it than needed, Schar rushing to defend his teammate was nice to see.

I can’t imagine the weight lifted off everyone’s shoulders. Hopefully, this win will propel them to snatch up a few more in the near future.

Next. Lascelles' commitment is vital to NUFC's future. dark

Following their first win, Newcastle United will get to stay at their home ground next week when they host Bournemouth. The Cherries suffered a 2-1 loss to Manchester United with Marcus Rashford scoring the winner in stoppage time.
