Newcastle United will travel to Old Trafford on Saturday and there are four players to keep an eye on when the Magpies face the Red Devils.
Newcastle United have several weaknesses that they must straighten out ahead of their match against Manchester United. Still winless after seven matches, every player on the roster must pick up their form and find ways to contribute on both ends of the pitch.
Like Newcastle, Manchester United are also struggling with a performance record of three wins, one draw and three losses. Jose Mourinho is hopeful that his key players will perform at an elite level to reverse this unusual form. With that being said, here are four players worth watching closely on Saturday.
Newcastle United – Martin Dubravka
Martin Dubravka is a quality goalkeeper who could start for multiple Premier League sides and he needs to put his athleticism on display at Old Trafford. After suffering an embarrassing defeat to West Ham last weekend, the Red Devils will look to attack the Magpies. Newcastle’s defense is stubborn, but it can be broken down and Dubravka will have to be ready to make some big saves against some big names in front of goal.
Manchester United – Paul Pogba
This match is comprised of players who have something to prove and Paul Pogba is one of them. A lot of drama is surrounding the club with Pogba supposedly no longer interested in playing for Manchester United. Rumors aside, Pogba can, on a good day, be the most dangerous player on the field.
He has played in all seven matches this season and has scored two goals and claimed an assist in the process. Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame must have an eye on Pogba at all times when the Red Devils maintain possession of the ball.
Newcastle United – Jamaal Lascelles
While some may disagree with this statement, it is true that Jamaal Lascelles has not been a true leader for Newcastle during these dark times. Players like Federico Fernandez and Matt Ritchie have been more vocal and passionate and this does not look good for the captain. Despite being major underdogs, Lascelles must motivate his teammates to play with urgency for 90 minutes.
Lascelles is a tough defender who often utilizes his tall frame to make stops defensively and score goals from set pieces offensively. However, the defender has not looked like the captain who earned Player of the Year last term, but this match is a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his leadership skills against a vulnerable giant.
Manchester United – Romelu Lukaku
Last, but certainly not least, is the Belgian hitman, Romelu Lukaku. Newcastle have conceded two goals to every elite club this season and for this reason they must watch out for Lukaku, especially on crosses from the wings. In his seven appearances, Lukaku has found the back of the net on four occasions and is enjoying 50% shooting accuracy this season. If Newcastle’s central defenders are not confrontational, Lukaku could add more goals to his tally.
