In their second friendly of the preseason, Newcastle United came away with a draw vs. Hull City.

Newcastle United opened their preseason with a 2-0 victory last week over St. Patrick’s Athletic. Yesterday, they finished even at two with Hull City in their second outing of the preseason. The draw took place at KCOM Stadium, the home venue of their Championship opponent.

The Magpies opened the scoring at the quarter-hour mark. Jonjo Shelvey launched a long ball over the top from his own half towards Joselu. The Spanish striker took the shot on his first touch and was able to beat the Hull City goalkeeper. While it is only a friendly against a lower division side, Joselu showcased some confidence on that play that was lacking at times last season.

Hull City would actually look the better side for large chunks of the match. They leveled the score right before the break, by way of a Dan Batty goal. Then, after the intermission, the Tigers would go ahead. Evandro finally was able to capitalize on a chance. The Brazilian veteran was Hull City’s most dangerous player for most of the match.

Ayoze Perez leveled the match with less than ten minutes to spare. Ki Sung-yueng’s corner was redirected from Ciaran Clark to Ayoze at the back post. Unmarked, he knocked it in from inches away for the late equalizer.

Newcastle United’s starting XI was Darlow, Yedlin, Lascelles, Yarney, Roberts, Diame, Shelvey, Murphy, Longstaff, Ritchie, Joselu. At the break, Rafa Benitez brought on Woodman, Sterry, Manquillo, Clark, Aarons, and Ayoze. Victor Fernandez, Ki, and Isaac Hayden subbed on during the second 45 minutes.
