Newcastle United will look to improve their form in the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

Newcastle’s top ten finish in the 2017/18 Premier League campaign came as a surprise to everyone in England. With next season just three months away, the Magpies will be determined to build on their success from this campaign.

Aside from elite clubs that constantly finish in the top six, it is difficult for most mid-table clubs to emulate success from previous seasons and develop consistency. Based on what was observed from Newcastle this season, the Magpies are in good shape to fight for another top ten finish next season. It is a bold assumption to make, but there are three reasons that help explain why Newcastle will maintain their success.

Four Championship Clubs

Three new Championship clubs – Wolverhampton, Cardiff City and Fulham – have earned promotion to the Premier League next season. However, the league will truly be comprised of four Championship clubs due to Huddersfield Town’s lack of quality.

The Terriers were in a relegation battle all season and barely achieved top flight survival. This bodes well for Newcastle as it provides the Magpies with an opportunity to take several points from these four clubs.

Of the newly promoted clubs, Wolverhampton will be the most dangerous due to their quality and financial flexibility. With that being said, Newcastle should not struggle against Cardiff City, Fulham and Huddersfield Town next campaign, especially at home.

Team Chemistry

Developing relationships is one thing, but maintaining relationships is more important. Rafa Benitez is now heading into his third season as Newcastle’s manager and this is great for team chemistry. The majority of the roster has also been with the club since Benitez joined and this chemistry will serve the Magpies well next season.

What makes team chemistry important in the Premier League is that it eliminates the factor of adaptability. In other words, the Magpies do not need to test the waters of the top flight next season. After all of the ups and downs last season, Newcastle now know what to expect and will be better prepared for adversity. Too many clubs rotate their managers and modify their roster, so it is a blessing that Newcastle have stuck together for multiple seasons.

Maturity

Newcastle will still be a relatively young team next season, but they have matured under the guidance of Rafa Benitez. The darkest times of the 2017/18 campaign were good lessons for Newcastle to grow as a collective unit next season. The primary difference between Newcastle and the nine clubs that finished above them was composure.

Composure is a primary component to success in professional football and Newcastle will most certainly improve their defending late in matches. The Magpies dropped too many points late in matches last season and that hindered Newcastle’s overall success.

As a newly promoted side in 2017, it was expected for Newcastle to make several mistakes. However, there will not be any room for Newcastle to make excuses next season. If the Magpies can learn from past mistakes and pull the double against inferior opponents, they will finish in the top ten once again.
