Sunderland 1 – Newcastle 4 (April 2006)

The Stadium of Light was the location for a monumental moment for Newcastle United fans, amidst a unique situation for both sides ahead of the match. Sunderland and the Magpies had sacked their managers during the season already, but Toon boss Glenn Roeder certainly enjoyed this trip to Wearside (along with the away fans).

An impressive first half from the home team had given them a 1-0 advantage at half-time, and looked to be in control. Sunderland fans were taking the opportunity to let their rivals know about the score, but then everything would change.

Injuries had a significant effect on Roeder’s squad, but Newcastle would score four second-half goals. The second strike came from the penalty spot courtesy of Alan Shearer, marking his final competitive goal for United.

The match also brought about a memorable chant from Newcastle fans, as the Toon completed their impressive comeback in style. “1-0 down, 4-1 up, Albert Luque wrapped it up!”

The two North East clubs were heading in very different directions. Sunderland managed a historically-low 15 points on the season, winning only one home game throughout the entire campaign. While Graeme Souness may not have had the Toon on the right path, Glenn Roeder was able to guide Newcastle back towards Europe.
