Newcastle 3 – Sunderland 1 (January 1985)

Within a chaotic match, the frenetic pace can cause players to not perform at their best. Sometimes that intense atmosphere can bring out incredible moments for a footballer, and a great example was Peter Beardsley’s hat-trick against Sunderland on New Year’s Day in 1985.

The fixture was unique in one sense for the poor form of both sides entering the game at St. James’ Park, with Newcastle and Sunderland near the bottom of the table. While passion was at a high level, the quality was limited. But Beardsley’s composure eventually shined, and he would make the most of his opportunities in front of goal.

The rough style from the visitors did not bring many benefits, as Sunderland would finish the match with nine men after two players were sent off in the second half.

Similar to their clash in 1969, this would be a pivotal game in regards to the future of Sunderland. The teams would play to a 0-0 draw at Roker Park in April of 1985, and it would be the last Tyne-Wear derby for four years. Sunderland were relegated, while Newcastle finished 14th.

Newcastle United and Sunderland have each seen tremendous talents within their squads. In this meeting, it was Peter Beardsley who stood above the rest to control the outcome.
