FIFA 18 simulates Newcastle United’s trip to Wembley Stadium
Before the real match kicks off tonight, FIFA 18 gave us a preview of Newcastle United vs. Spurs.
Tonight, we get to see a midweek match between Newcastle United and Tottenham. Rather than wait until kickoff in a few hours, we turned to a FIFA 18 simulation to tell us how the match will play out.
The Spurs lineup is unchanged from the squad that lost to West Brom last weekend. That gives them a 3-4-2-1 featuring: Lloris; Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen; Trippier, Eriksen, Wanyama, Rose; Lamela, Alli; Kane.
For Newcastle United, the lineup is a compilation of our staff selections. In a 4-2-3-1, it’s Dubravka; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett; Shelvey, Merino; Kenedy, Perez, Ritchie; Joselu.
After a lifeless first couple minutes, Spurs would energize the crowd with an early goal. Dele Alli cut into the middle of the Newcastle United defense and beat Martin Dubravka in the 5th minute. Especially in the early stages, the Magpies seemed content trying to play the ball over the top to Kenedy, but they were consistently rebuffed.

With little coming from Newcastle in the attack, their defense was beaten again before the half. A Kieran Trippier cross found Harry Kane unmarked in the box. As he typically does, the star forward buried the chance. Spurs held the edge of the scoreline, in shots, and in possession at the break.
Following a couple dangerous moments, for Tottenham to start the half, Newcastle United finally had one of their own. Joselu beat the Spurs central defense to the area, but a last-second sliding tackle thwarted the chance. After that scare, Harry Kane decided to add another goal to the lead, securing a brace in the 61st minute. Jacob Murphy and Mohamed Diame were subbed on for the Toon, but neither could make an impact. Matt Ritchie sailed a shot from the edge of the area in the 70th minute for Newcastle’s first shot.
If you thought 3-0 was bad, meet 4-0. Dele Alli bagged a brace of his own in the 87th minute. Thankfully, Newcastle United didn’t get shut out. Joselu scored a goal right before the final whistle. The Magpies lose 4-1 on the road and drop their fourth straight match, managing only one shot on goal.
