After an impressive four game winning streak, Newcastle United have irresponsibly lost two consecutive matches.

The 2017/18 Premier League campaign is coming to an end as Newcastle United only have three matches remaining. A tough string of matches await the Magpies as they will face Watford (A), Tottenham (A) and Chelsea (H). After two successive defeats from Everton and West Brom, Newcastle must try to regain their impressive form.

Even with their backs against the wall, Rafa Benitez’s men overcame adversity this season and secured top flight survival. While it is impressive that Newcastle avoided relegation one month early, it seems as though the Magpies have lost their motivation to play.

In order for Newcastle to finish the season in the top ten of the table, they must stay focused. The Magpies will be underdogs in two of their last three matches, but they must play with urgency and confidence.

Staying Grounded

Currently tenth in the Premier League table with 41 points, the Magpies are only three points ahead of Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Watford. If Newcastle aim to attract quality players this summer, they must do all they can to finish above the aforementioned clubs.

In order achieve this, the Magpies need to be reminded that the season ends after 38 matches are played, not when survival is confirmed. The 1-0 loss to Everton was one of Newcastle’s worst performances of the campaign.

Newcastle lacked sufficient energy, struggled in their efforts to coordinate passes and did not threaten Everton offensively. The club’s form was significantly better in the 1-0 loss to West Brom, but the Magpies failed to defeat a vulnerable opponent.

More from Newcastle Toons

Had Newcastle maintained the confidence they possessed during their winning streak, they surely would have made it six victories in a row. Instead, the Magpies became comfortable with their league status took their foot off the gas pedal.

Rafa Benitez

The Spaniard faces a difficult task this week in training as he must prepare his squad both tactically and mentally. Euphoria and arrogance is a severe problem if it is not contained immediately, but maybe the two consecutive losses will serve Newcastle well.

The last three matches of the season will not be easy and will require maximum effort from Newcastle to steal points. Yes, survival is confirmed, but Benitez and the Toon Army deserve a strong finish for their unmatched loyalty this season.
