The Toon Takeaways are not positive after a dismal Newcastle United side lost to West Brom today.

Newcastle United are virtually a lock to stay safe in the Premier League for next season. They played like they had nothing to gain against a battling West Brom and lost 1-0 at home. Matt Phillips scored the lone goal in the first half.

Top Toons

Mohamed Diame: Honestly, Diame was the only player that looked like he belonged on the pitch for Newcastle United. He worked hard and tried to defend and create from the midfield.

Mediocre Magpies

Jonjo Shelvey: After months of top-class soccer, today was a return to the early season form for Shelvey. His passing was poor and his effort was largely absent. The club needed one of their stars today and they didn’t get it.

Kenedy: He was active, but his casual miss in the first half was a massive moment. The winger needed to focus and bury the chance.

Dwight Gayle: Too much falling from Gayle today. He was a non-factor and took multiple dives rather than battle through and create opportunities.

Quick Kicks

-This was honestly a flashback to early in the season. The club looked flat and not focused. They couldn’t pass, defend, or attack.

-Islam Slimani should have been sent off for his retaliatory kick late in the match. Chances are, after review, he will be suspended.

-Shelvey, battling for a late World Cup spot, was dismal. He arguably the best player on the team and played like one of the worst today.

-Newcastle United were vulnerable on the counter-attack today, which would usually mean they were very aggressive in the attack. Unfortunately, they were left exposed due to poor passes in the midfield and lackadaisical defending.

-Credit to Mo Diame. He worked whistle to whistle and tried to push the club towards success. On a day where the effort was lacking, his passion was noticeable.
