Newcastle United’s boss requires the answers for some key questions.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez are in a comfortable position at the moment, as four consecutive Premier League victories have moved them out of relegation danger. The Spanish coach’s future on Tyneside has been unclear in some respects lately, but the 58-year-old does appear open to the idea of extending his contract at St. James’ Park.

Benitez has another year remaining on his Newcastle deal, but has certainly made it obvious that he wants to see more from the club’s hierarchy. He wants to understand owner Mike Ashley’s plans for the future, whether that means more investment in the transfer market or the ultimate sale of the club.

Speaking with The Shields Gazette, Benitez was reluctant to commit to any outcomes when asked if he was open to signing a new deal. “I was really pleased with everything I’ve seen, but at the same time we’re professionals, and we have to be sure that next year, we have the tools to compete at the level we want to compete at.”

The manager has not guarded many of his feelings about the future, and Benitez must be able to make the changes to keep Newcastle climbing up the table.

He went on to state that contract talks will begin in a more serious manner once the current term is completed.

“Obviously, it’s too early because we have just finished, but we have plenty of time to talk about ideas for the future.”

Potential frustration

The concern for Newcastle fans is if the scenario that Benitez describes does not work out, and perhaps signals the end of his time with the club.

Ashley has been unpredictable with his decisions in the past, and there is no guarantee at this point that the Toon’s tactician will receive what he desires for 2018-19.
