Newcastle United secured a massive victory over Arsenal at St. James’ Park.

For the first time since 2005, Newcastle United defeated the Gunners at St. James’ Park. Goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie overcame an early Alexandre Lacazette strike.

Top Toons

Ayoze Perez: A perfect opening goal and lovely backheel assist on the second. He’s been in great form for the Magpies.

DeAndre Yedlin: The speedy American defender did a great job getting involved in the attack. His cross on Ayoze’s goal was pinpoint accurate.

Jonjo Shelvey: As he has most of this season, Shelvey continuously lobbed the ball over Arsenal’s backline all match. His long pass to Dwight Gayle began the sequence of the opening goal.

Matt Ritchie: After working hard the entire match, Ritchie buried his chance for the second goal. His finish was composed and the winner on a great day for Newcastle United.

Mediocre Magpies

Dwight Gayle: Honestly, it wasn’t a poor match from the forward, but I had to put somebody here. He mishandled a few of Shelvey’s long passes and gave up on another.

Quick Kicks

-Mohamed Diame did not stop working for a second of that match. He went into tackles from one end of the pitch to the other. Each time Arsenal thought they would get a chance to break out, Diame was there to stifle the opportunity.

-Islam Slimani was a second-half substitute and showed his class. He pressed the backline constantly and had a powerful and accurate header to get the hocket assist on Ritchie’s goal.

-Kenedy lacked the final touch on a couple occasions, but his work rate was great.

-Martin Dubravka allowed his first goal at St. James’ Park. A solid cross left him exposed, but he looked a bit slow trying to get across.

-You can’t say enough about Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune. The central defensive pairing made countless clearances and interceptions. They make Newcastle United tough to beat.
