The Newcastle United defender enjoyed a strong showing this past weekend.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez earned a critical victory this past weekend, as a 1-0 win against Huddersfield Town now has the club seven points above the relegation places. The Magpies were strong in defence at St. James’ Park, and one aspect of the back-line had a positive effect throughout the line-up.

Florian Lejeune helped to clear out several opportunities for the opposition’s attack, and his work in possession was absolutely magnificent on the day. The 26-year-old attempted more passes (105) and completed more passes (91) than any other player in Saturday’s fixture.

Lejeune has partnered well with team captain Jamaal Lascelles as of late, and the two have done a tremendous job of solidifying the area in front of goal. The Toon completed March with two victories and two clean sheets thanks to their efforts.

This type of passing ability brings a new dimension to not only the defence, but also boosts the midfield and attack. Lejeune’s composure on the ball helps to keep possession, something Benitez’s side enjoyed the majority of versus Huddersfield.

The squad can quickly move up the pitch as well, as the French centre-back can get the ball accurately to the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame.

Finally, Lejeune can then add to the attack with long passes forward and sharp touches in the opposing half.

Top form at the right time

Lejeune has faced a variety of challenges during his first season on Tyneside, and it began in the first Premier League game of the campaign. An injury against Tottenham kept him out of action, and his play was not optimal once he did return to the pitch.

However, now he has cemented his place in Benitez’s line-up and is showcasing the skill that made him such a desired target this past summer.
