Newcastle United reportedly have their eye on a new attacker for next season.
Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez face an important challenge tomorrow afternoon, as they look for three points against Huddersfield Town at St. James’ Park. There will also be the task of adding key talent during the summer transfer period, and the Magpies may already be set on one particular target.
The Chronicle reported this week that Benitez is very interested in a “number ten” to boost the attack, and midfielder Valon Berisha could be the perfect fit. Currently playing for Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga, the 25-year-old possesses many of the skills that the Spanish tactician will be desiring from the position.
The piece states that Newcastle have identified at least ten players, and scouts have been monitoring Berisha for more than a year.
The interest is not surprising, as an effective attacking midfielder has been elusive for Benitez since arriving on Tyneside.
The current term has seen a variety of individuals play in the number ten spot. However, there has not been much production in the final third, as the Toon have scored 30 goals through as many league matches.

Ayoze Perez, Matt Ritchie, Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu have all lined up in that area of the formation. Part of the blame for those low numbers is certainly due to the strikers, but solid play behind the forwards can provide more chances.
The right choice?
Berisha is in his sixth season with Salzburg, and has progressed well with each year. His passing and abilities on the ball have truly shined, able to create scoring opportunities all on his own.
Success has been present also, as Berisha has captured league titles and participated in European competitions with his current club.
While there would of course be an adjustment period to English football, there is quite a bit to like about the potential move.
