Newcastle United couldn’t hang with Liverpool, losing 2-0 at Anfield.

On a freezing evening at Anfield, Newcastle United were blanked by Liverpool 2-0. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane scored a goal apiece for the Reds.

Top Toons

Paul Dummett: Mohamed Salah is playing as well as anyone in the soccer world right now and the Newcastle United left-back did a solid job limiting his impact. He chased down the speedy Egyptian winger and took away his space frequently.

Mohamed Diame: Playing without his recent partner Jonjo Shelvey, Diame was never afraid to dive in on tackles against the Reds. The midfielder also had the best effort on goal for the Magpies, forcing a top save at the end of the first half.

Mediocre Magpies

Jacob Murphy: The winger did not take advantage of getting a start. I completely forgot he was on the pitch until the commentators mentioned his name.

Kenedy: Despite a solid work rate, the Chelsea loanee gave away possession too often and tried to do too much at times. He probably could’ve hurried back a bit quicker on Salah’s goal.

Mikel Merino: Filling in for Shelvey, Merino’s distribution left something to be desired. He was the needed link from the midfield to the attack but couldn’t put his passes on target.

Quick Kicks

-For some reason, it seemed Kenedy wasn’t seeing incoming passes well. He failed to easily control simple passes and it limited the danger on a few chances.

-Martin Dubravka played well, despite allowing two goals. He made a couple solid saves and wasn’t afraid to get creative clearing the ball outside of the penalty area.

-While the strategy was clearly to sit deep, especially early on, the Magpies needed to keep more of the ball. Their possession and passing were poor at Anfield today.

-Christian Atsu has great pace, but surprisingly, isn’t very creative on the ball. He had chances to go at defenders but didn’t have any solid moves in his arsenal.
