After leading 2-0 late into the match, Newcastle United conceded twice to finish level with Bournemouth, 2-2.

Newcastle United controlled most of the match but conceded two late goals to finish level with Bournemouth.

On the road, Newcastle United dominated Bournemouth in the first half. Jonjo Shelvey was spraying the ball all over the pitch and the Magpies would capitalize in the 17th minute. Shelvey sent a pass over the top to Matt Ritchie. The former Bournemouth man centered the ball towards Dwight Gayle. After an attempted save, the striker was able to calmly backheel the loose ball in for the opening goal.

The hosts were not able to garner much in the attack, as Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles cleared away countless passes. Most of Bournemouth’s shots went well over the crossbar.

In first-half added time, the Magpies doubled their lead. Paul Dummett sent in a second cross after a corner and it found its way to Ayoze Perez towards the far post. Bournemouth keeper Asmir Begovic couldn’t control Perez’s pass and Gayle boomed it home from point-blank range.

Newcastle United controlled the match into the second half, but Bournemouth showcased more danger in this half. It was a pair of Newcastle United misses that were noteworthy in this 45 minutes. Ayoze Perez couldn’t tap home a rebound and Jonjo Shelvey wasn’t able to capitalize on a wide open run down the middle of the pitch, skying a shot after Christian Atsu squared the ball to him. Almost immediately after Shelvey’s miss, Bournemouth opened their account. Adam Smith blasted home a shot from the edge of the area in the 80th minute. Then, after a defensive scramble from Newcastle United, Dan Gosling buried an equalizer in the 89th minute.

Bournemouth would have a handful of chances in the five minutes of added time, but the scoreline would remain level at 2-2. While points on the road are hard to come by for Newcastle United, they will regret not coming away with three after being the better side most of the match.
