Newcastle United: Top ten goalkeepers in club history
By Roy Emanuel
8 – Kevin Carr (1976-1985)
The late 1970s and early 1980s were a difficult period for Newcastle United. Several years in the Second Division were frustrating, until the likes of Kevin Keegan and Peter Beardsley helped to earn promotion to the top flight in 1983-84.
But during that period, the Toon saw fine goalkeeping play from Kevin Carr. He was voted to be Player of the Year twice, and made almost 200 appearances for the club.
With excellent positioning and no fear when it came to coming off his line for the ball, Carr was a steady and reliable presence for United as they battled their way back to the First Division.
Carr eventually played for Carlisle United and Hartlepool United before retiring from the professional game. But it was his career after football that is perhaps just as noteworthy and interesting.
Carr joined Northumbria Police and would even be a part of the team that helped protect fans during Newcastle matches. He would work his way up to be a detective constable as well.
The toughness and desire that he displayed on the pitch clearly served him well in his next career, and Carr certainly takes pride in everything that he does professionally.
Newcastle United’s journey back to the top flight was the mission, but Kevin Carr gave all of himself during his time with the team.
